Solid film lubrication

Solid film lubrication

The solid film lubricant treatment is a general term for multi-functional film on the surface of various materials, and it is widely used for many industries of automobile, OA appliances, home appliances, semi-conductors, optical products, industrial plants and equipment, aviation and aerospace equipment, medical devices, etc. Based on the major components, the solid film lubricants are mainly divided into fluororesin, molybdenum disulfide, graphite series, which are manufactured respectively by adding special adhesive and other materials with advanced preparation and dispersion processes.

The investor of our company, TOYO Drilube Co., Ltd,  a professional DRILUBE® (solid film lubricating material) company established in 1962 has lead the industry with a production and operation system that integrates R&D, manufacturing, sales and coating of DRILUBE. The main functions of DRILUBE® products manufactured by TOYO Drilube and mainly used for coating are as below:

▪ Reduce friction coefficient, and achieve stable sliding property even under strict conditions.

▪ Make permanent lubricity possible for light load.

▪ Improve abrasion resistance.

▪ Prevent heating conglutination during action.

▪ Improve rust prevention.

▪ Achieve noise reduction by decreasing friction.

▪ Extend service life for gears during initial running.

▪ Be widely used in extremely low/high temperature conditions.

▪ Be applicable in special environment, e.g. vacuum, aggressive environment, radiation, etc.

▪ Be chemically stable, resistant against chemical and gas erosion.

▪ Prevent attachment of dust and debris owing to dry lubricating film that is different from oil lubricant.

▪ Provide insulativity or electrical conductivity based on the difference of  types.

▪ Achieve enhanced separation based on the difference of  types.

▪ Achieve better effect if combined with grease.

▪ Be suitable for a variety of materials, e.g. metal, rubber, plastic, etc.

As the solid film lubricant can improve the sliding property, it has become a multi-functional film with good lubricating property, abrasion resistance, heat resistance, non-adhesion, electrical conductivity, insulating property, chemical resistance, corrosion resistance, noise reduction, and initial running property that is no lower than lubricant or grease. It is welcomed by many companies for recent years, and the lubricating of the solid film lubricant with stable lubricant property  is well noticed and widely used.

Representative Lubricating Substance

Fluororesin

The friction coefficient of fluororesin is 0.03~0.04. The fluororesin products are the solid film lubricants prepared by PTFE, EPF and variouscarrier solutions. Among synthetic resins nowadays, fluororesin has excellent low friction and nonadhesion, in addition to chemical resistance, corrosion resistance, heat resistance, insulating property. The fluororesin film lubricants effectively bringing these properties into play are widely used in many fields.

Molybdenum disulfide

The molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) products are manufactured by MoS2 with purity of 99.99%: natural colored molybdenum minerals are crushed and selected by flotation and then impurities are removed by special refining method.

The molecular structure of MoS2 is layered grids: each layer consists of Mo atom and 2 S atoms on both sides; Mo atom and Satom are well bonded, while Satoms are not so well bonded; hence, layers might easily break and slide; in this way, the lubricating property can be utilized to reduce friction.

Among MoS2 products, some are compliant with US military specifications and can be used for products of mass production with low cost according to different purposes and uses

Graphite

The element symbol of graphite is C, same as that for diamond, which is an allotropic of C. The crystal structure of graphite is that the 1.421Å hexagonal ring between C-C atoms; the layer is formed when these hexagonal rings are bonded with each other continuously; layers are overlapped evenly by 3.364Å; each C atom is located at the center of the upper layer. The horizontal covalent bond between rings on the same layer is strong, while the vertical electron coupling between rings on different layers is weak. Hence, layers might easily break and slide to show low friction. In addition, it is chemically stable, nontoxic, resistant against most organic solutions and chemical substances, heat resistance and electrically conductive.
